The Federal Aviation
Administration has issued new rules and regulations with regards to air travel
safety. Following are some of the ways that travelers through the
Gainesville Regional Airport will be affected:
The Transportation Security Administration has a complete list of items that are permitted and prohibited. Click here to see the complete list (in PDF format) of these items.
Travelers will need to arrive at the Gainesville Regional Airport at least one hour prior to scheduled departure from the Gainesville Regional Airport (possibly much sooner at larger, higher profile airports). The security checks required before boarding airplanes will be more stringent and will be a more time consuming process. Please be prepared to turn on cell phones, pagers and lap top computers to demonstrate to security personal that they are working devices. Also please be prepared for more thorough checks of bags that pass through X-ray scanners. There will be random bag checks by hand and in addition to passing through the floor standing metal detectors, all passengers will be scanned with the hand held metal detectors (the wand). Passengers may randomly be subjected to pat down searches.
The Short Term Parking Lot was
closed after September 11th. It is now open for parking.
For rental car return locations, please call your rental car company.
Their local numbers are:

No unattended parking will be allowed in the drop off and pick up zone. No cars should ever be left unattended in this zone. If dropping off a passenger and bags and intending to stay until that passenger's plane departs, please drop off the passenger and their baggage and park in the short term lot. If picking up a passenger, never park in the loading and unloading zone and then walk inside to meet or wait for your passenger.
Non-ticketed passengers will not be allowed past security check points and into airport departure lounges. This means that, here at the Gainesville Regional Airport, friends and relatives will no longer be allowed to accompany ticketed travelers through the security checkpoint on the right side of the terminal building to wait with the ticketed passenger in the departure lounge. When ticketed passengers proceed through airport security, they may be required to have their picture ID as well as their tickets with matching name available to show security personnel.
Airports that have typically offered curb-side or off-site check in will no longer be allowed to offer those services. All passengers must check in with a ticket agent of the airline that they are traveling on. In addition, gate check-in will no longer be allowed. Whether using an e-ticket or other printed ticket, you must check in at the airline counter when you arrive at the airport.
The number of visible security personnel in airports has increasing. In addition, you are likely to start seeing air marshals (security personnel) accompanying higher profile or larger flights.
